Youth Tour

The 2017 Youth Tour Essay Contest is underway now!

Congratulations to our 2016 Youth Tour Essay Contest Finalists. They came to the Cooperative in April of 2016 to compete for 3 all expense paid trips to Washington, D.C. on the Missouri Youth Tour and 3 tuitions to the nationally recognized Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience (CYCLE). All of the finalists did an excellent job! We were proud of their efforts in the 2016 contest.

Pictured are Carlie Cunningham (Homeschool), Mary Hinchie (Fulton High School), Mallory Smith (North Callaway High School), Caitlyn Chapman (South Callaway High School) and Taylor Meyer (New Bloomfield High School). Not pictured, but also a finalist was Wyatt Branson of North Callaway High School. Carlie, Mary and Mallory represented Callaway Electric in the 2016 Missouri Youth Tour on a week long all expense paid tour of Washington, D.C. Caitlyn, Taylor and Wyatt attended the CYCLE conference in Jefferson City in July.

What is the Youth Tour?

Each year in January the Cooperative sponsors an essay contest for High School Juniors living in or attending school in Callaway Electric's service area (this includes Fulton, New Bloomfield, North Callaway and South Callaway High School). The top winners of the contest are awarded an all expense paid week long trip to Washington, D.C.

The trip includes visits to monuments, memorials, museums and landmarks. Youth Tour winners also visit their U.S. Representatives and Senators. They travel with a group of eighty high school juniors from across Missouri who will meet up with more than 1,400 youth from across the U.S. during their week in D.C. It's a trip many have considered the experience of a lifetime!

How to participate

To participate in the contest applicants are first asked to write an essay. Of the essays received, six finalists are chosen. The finalists are invited to the Cooperative for a written test and interview with a panel of three judges. Three top scoring finalists are awarded all expense paid trips to D.C. The remaining finalists are awarded tuition to the nationally recognized Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience (CYCLE). It is held in Jefferson City each July. Planned and sponsored by Missouri's Electric Cooperatives, the conference provides an opportunity to learn more about Cooperatives, leadership and governement along being lots of FUN!
