Renewable energy beneath your feet

Thomas W. Howard, CEO/General Manager

As interest in renewable energy sources rises worldwide, many consumers gravitate toward thinking wind or solar are the primary options. However, one of the most effective, efficient and proven renewable energy sources – geothermal energy – receives less media fanfare and is always available regardless of weather.

Geothermal energy – heat within the Earth – isn’t something we see or touch, but its incredible benefits command a seat at the table of renewable energy discussions. With a ground source heat pump (GSHP), electric cooperative members can tap into the benefits of down-to-earth renewable energy technology.

As a growing number of consumers look for ways to incorporate renewable energy sources into a new home build or renovation, GSHP systems are typically worth exploring. Technologies such as GSHPs harness geothermal energy and, when paired with good home insulation, can deliver efficient, reliable and environmentally responsible home heating and cooling plus hot water.

How ground source heat pumps work

Because the planet is a giant solar collector, the matter below the frost line, typically a minimum of 4 feet down, is a constant temperature of around 55 degrees F year-round. This underground heat provides a consistent energy source that isn’t dependent on Mother Nature’s variability.

GSHPs use a series of environmentally friendly fluid-filled underground pipes that absorb the solar energy stored in the Earth and carry it indoors. Using refrigeration principles, heat can be taken from the ground and transferred through a heat pump to the air in a home during winter. In the summer, the process is reversed and the heat in a home is transferred to the ground to cool the home.

Because of the consistency and availability of geothermal energy, GSHPs reliably operate 24/7 year-round. The technology allows homeowners to harness a reliable renewable energy source to guarantee home comfort no matter the time of day or weather conditions. This is important since energy needs to be accessible when a member needs it. Some renewable resources don’t offer this same security.

For example, sunshine is required for solar panels to generate energy efficiently, and certain wind speeds are necessary for energy production from wind turbines. These patterns don’t always line up with member-consumers’ demand. On cold winter days, the sun is not likely shining strong enough for extended durations of time sufficient to sustainably power electric appliances and furnaces. Because energy storage technology is not yet advanced enough to be economically viable for most people, consistent energy generation resources are necessary.

With today’s growing consumer interest in renewable energy, geothermal energy systems are experiencing a resurgence in popularity. This technology has been around for decades and the latest advances in technology make it easier than ever to integrate GSHPs into individual homes and businesses.

Cost considerations and savings opportunities

While GSHP installations are more expensive than a conventional HVAC system, they have long lifespans – about 25 years for indoor components and more than 50 years for ground loops. The systems are up to 65% more efficient than traditional HVAC units and with the energy savings, GSHPs often pay for themselves within seven years.

A 26% federal tax credit for residential GSHP installation is available through the end of 2022. Additionally, Callaway Electric Cooperative offers member an $850 per ton rebate for qualified GSHP installations.

Our cooperative has been educating members on geothermal energy and offering rebates for GSHPs since 1986. We have decades of experience working with members to determine if geothermal energy or other renewable energy sources are the right choices for their homes or businesses. If you are interested in learning more about GSHPs and our rebate program, please contact Clay or Andy in our member service department at 573-642-3326 or email CECService@callawayelectric.com.

I thank you for your support of Callaway Electric Cooperative.
